Squares & Blankets Crochet Patterns
Both of the square patterns here are really blanket patterns in disguise.
The Meadow Square starts from a magic circle with eight puff stitches and grows by eight cluster puffs every round - four corners, one extra cluster per side per round. That means there is no fixed finished size. You stop when the square is as big as you want it: a coaster at three rounds, a cushion panel at eight, a whole baby blanket if you keep going. It is written for size 4 yarn on a J hook, and the corner construction (puff, chain 2, puff into the same space) is the part worth reading twice, because everything after round three is a repeat of it.
The Starburst Granny Square puts a radiating center inside the same square shape, so a blanket made from these reads as a pattern rather than as a grid.
For a blanket, work out the square count before you buy yarn, not after. A 50 by 60 inch throw from 10-inch squares is 30 squares; the same throw from 6-inch squares is 80. The blanket calculator does the sizing, the granny square color planner lets you fix the color order before you commit, and the photo to chart maker will turn an image into a square-by-square layout.
