Why we round up so generously: macrame cord can't be joined invisibly mid-piece — running out 80% of the way through a plant hanger usually means starting that cord over. Every result above already includes a +10% safety buffer and rounds up. Leftover cord becomes fringe, tassels, or your next keychain. Running short becomes a bad evening.

Cord Length FAQ

How much cord do I need for a plant hanger?

For a typical 36" hanger with airy knotting: about 29–30 ft per cut cord (folded through the ring), so 4 cut cords ≈ 115–120 ft total — one 50 m spool covers it with room to spare.

How much cord for a wall hanging?

Use 5× the finished length per cord, doubled for the lark's head mount: a 24" hanging needs about 20 ft of cut cord per pair of working ends. Multiply by however many cords span your dowel.

Why multiply by 4–6?

Knots eat cord. Open designs use about 4× the finished length, average coverage about 5×, and solid square-knot panels 7× or more. When in doubt, size up — leftovers always find a use.

Does cord thickness matter?

A little: thicker cord travels farther around every knot. We add roughly +5% for 4 mm, +10% for 5 mm and +15% for 6 mm compared to 3 mm cord.
