How the chart is built
Latch hook canvas is a grid of holes, and the standard is 3.75 mesh — 3.75 holes per inch in both directions. One hole takes one pre-cut piece of yarn, so a chart is not an approximation of the picture: it is an exact map of what goes in each hole.
Everything follows from your canvas size. Pick 20 × 27 inches and the grid is round(20 × 3.75) = 75 columns by round(27 × 3.75) = 101 rows, which is 7,575 holes. The photo is scaled to fit that grid (cropping or letterboxing depending on the fit you choose), and each cell takes the average colour of the pixels that fall inside it.
Then the colours are reduced. Latch hook yarn comes in packs, so a chart with 40 shades is useless — you need the picture rebuilt from the small number of colours you will actually buy. The tool samples the image and runs a median-cut reduction down to the number of colours you ask for, then assigns every cell to its nearest palette colour by RGB distance. You can lock a colour you like, merge two that are too close to tell apart on canvas, or edit any hex by hand and re-run.
The yarn estimate is the honest part: one hole = one piece, a typical pre-cut pack holds about 320 pieces, so packs per colour = ceil(holes of that colour ÷ 320). Buy one spare pack per colour, because piece counts per pack vary by brand.
Printing at true scale
There are two printable versions and they do different jobs.
Fits the page shrinks the chart so you can read it from the sofa. Use it as a reference while you hook.
True scale prints at 3.75 squares per inch, so a printed square is exactly the size of a hole in your canvas and you can lay the paper over the canvas to check your place. At that scale a sheet of US Letter with half-inch margins holds 26 columns × 31 rows once the registration margins are allowed for, so anything bigger is split across pages. Each page carries registration crosshairs at all four corners and a label saying which columns and rows it covers; trim to the crosshairs and tape the pages edge to edge. Print at 100% scale — if your print dialog is set to “fit to page” the whole point is lost.
A worked example
A 16 × 24 inch canvas with a photo reduced to 8 colours.
- Grid: 16 × 3.75 = 60 columns, 24 × 3.75 = 90 rows — 5,400 holes.
- If the background colour covers 2,100 of those holes, that is ceil(2,100 ÷ 320) = 7 packs of that shade, and you buy 8.
- Total pieces across all eight colours is always the hole count, 5,400, so the whole project is roughly ceil(5,400 ÷ 320) = 17 packs plus the per-colour rounding — expect 20 to 24 in practice.
- True-scale printing: ceil(60 ÷ 28) = 3 pages across, ceil(90 ÷ 33) = 3 pages down — 9 sheets, taped into one 16 × 24 inch sheet that lies over the canvas exactly.
